If you know me, you know that I'm an eyelash freak. While I could go on for days about all of my favorite different eyelash related products and techniques, I won't. Instead, I'm going to talk about the one makeup product that literally every girl owns- mascara.

Here's the deal- the truth is you don't need to splurge on mascara to get good quality and results (although if you're down to spend some cash you can snag some pretty amazing high-end ones). The problem is the fact that there are literally HUNDREDS of mascaras on the market, and narrowing down one that's the best is nearly impossible. And who has the time or the money to test out a bajillion different mascaras?

Well, the research team for Reviews.com did just that. They spent hours poring over user ratings on popular beauty e-commerce sites and retailers as well as extensively testing different formulas. So how did they decide which mascaras made the cut?

To test each mascara, the team applied each option every morning and kept it on for up to 15 hours without reapplying, priming, or curling. The products were judged based on the following criteria:

  • How much longer their lashes looked
  • How separated and defined each was lash was
  • How thick lashes looked without clumping

I've tried A LOT of mascaras in my day, and after reviewing the research team's findings, I actually agree with them. A crucial component of my blog is talking about products that actually deliver results and provide good quality, so when Reviews.com reached out and asked me to cover this, I agreed because I think their results and testing measures were accurate.

So without further ado- Which mascaras really are the best?

Benefit Cosmetics They're Real! Mascara (Best Overall)

I can vouch for how amazing this mascara, it's definitely one of my favorites. I love the structure of the wand and the bristles, it really makes sure to coat even the tiniest of lashes with product. The formula is great, however, be care with application because it can be a little liquidy and fly all over your face if you're the kind of gal that slaps on her mascara in the car on the way to work. I only use this mascara for upper lashes, because I do find that it can run a little bit when applied to bottom lashes. Also, it's not waterproof but it can be a little tricky to remove at the end of the day. Besides that, this really is a great mascara that will make your lashes look amazing.

Lancôme Definicils High Definition Mascara (Best Lengthening Mascara)

Okay I tried this mascara years ago and it is AMAZING. A little on the pricier side, but if you're willing to splurge, go for it. This mascara makes your eyes literally look sexy, it provides the perfect balance of volume and length. This mascara also happens to be one of Kim K's faves, incase anyone's a fan.

Maybelline Great Lash Washable Mascara (Best Drugstore Mascara)

Oh my god, you guys, I'm not kidding when I say this was one of the first makeup products I ever owned. It was also the mascara I always saw in my mothers vanity, and I used to swipe it from her all the time in middle school (LOL). It's legit upwards of $4 and provides length, volume, little to no clumping and comes in a waterproof option as well. Plus the pink and green packaging is iconic, this mascara will forever be my first love.

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara (Best Mascara for Sensitive Eyes)

I'm a huge Tarte fan I absolutely love this brand of cosmetics and I really do enjoy their products. That being said, I have not tried this product personally, but it has garnered great reviews. It's formulated with oils derived from olives (apparently this is slightly different than traditional olive oil??) to nourish and protect lashes, all while providing volume, length, and curl. I'm actually super curious about trying this product, so I'll report back once I get my hands on it.

Blinc Mascara (Best Thickening Mascara)

I've tried this mascara several times and while I do like it, I wouldn't give it the title of the best thickening mascara. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy this product but I a) think they are better thickening mascaras to buy and b) find that it can run sometimes. You can remove this mascara with literally just water, which may be part of the reason it runs for me (I sweat on my face when it's really hot out). I recommend Too Face's Better Than Sex Mascara (one of my faves) or Clinique's Chubby Lash.

Dior Diorshow Mascara (Best Volumizing Mascara

This is fashion show backstage cult favorite, due to its creamy and easily buildable formula. I do think the brush is a little too large for my liking, since I like to build volume on specific parts of my eye to create a more dramatic look. That being said, I love this mascara and would own it all times if wasn't on the pricier side. Dior's Iconic Curl mascara is AMAZING too, I would actually purchase that one over this one.

YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils (Best False-like Lashes)

You literally don't need a second coat with this mascara, because it delivers a serious va-va-voom effect after a few initial swipes. I know people who swear by this product, so if you love a dramatic and full look, here ya go! For a falsie-esque lash look I also recommend mascaras that have have fibers in them, these literally make lashes longer by extending the length of them through fibers. I recommend Too Faced's Better Than False Lashes
