I miss the days when fashion week was new and exciting to me, now as an actual New Yorker, I can't help but breathe a sigh of relief as the event comes to a close. The insane traffic, style star wannabe's and troughs of Instagram "celebrities" gets tiring, although I do enjoy spotting the real celebrities. While I did get my fair share of fashion fun this year, I was very content living vicariously through my fashionable friends and trusted social media fashion authorities. That being said, I still kept track of some notable moments from this season's NYFW. In no particular order, here are some of my favorite moments and looks from the past week.
Tom Ford Returns
Welcome back Mr.Ford! After his departure from previous fashion weeks, Tom Ford kicked off this year's festivities with a f*cking fabulous show, which just so happens to also be the name of his newest fragrance (which was used as the invitation for the show, guess mine was lost in the mail). In true Ford fashion, the collection featured his signature 90's glam, which consisted of structured yet sexy jackets, ruched dresses, plunging necklines and strong shoulders. The front row included the likes of Kim K, Ciara, Julianne Moore and Cindy Crawford. Here's hoping Mr.Ford's return to NYFW is a more permanent position.
Kim Kardashian Goes Virtually Pant-less (and platinum blonde)
Speaking of Kim, she came to NYFW to pull some serious looks. Sporting a brand new platinum silver 'do, she was spotted all over fashion week at various shows and events, sans Kanye and her other sisters (except Kendall who was, you know, on the runway). Is it just me or does Kim literally get better looking as time goes on? She raised some eyebrows when she stepped out in sheer leggings and black undies, paired with a leather blazer and bandeau top. Here's the thing- while I personally would never even attempt to pull this look off, Kim knew it was a style risk and went for it anyways. I appreciate a good risk, and it's not like she was wearing this to go grocery shopping or pick up North from school (as if she does that anyways). It was fashion week, and I applaud the risk factor of this look. Also, if anyone could pull this off, it would be Kim, let's be real.
Kaia Gerber Slays the Runway
Cindy Crawford's daughter Kaia seems to be following in her mom's supermodel footsteps. The 16 year old made her fashion week runway debut this season for the likes of Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs and Coach, to name a few. Her shining catwalk moment was at the Alexander Wang show, where her walk was so fierce, everyone was buzzing with excitement. Just watching the video alone literally gave me chills, you guys, SHE IS 16 YEARS OLD! I've seen plenty of models walk, in person and online and I have never been so captivated by a walk. The crowd freaked out when Kaia hit the floor, and rightly so. Check out her strut for yourself below.
Rihanna Rides Off the Runway
It’s Rihanna’s world and we’re all just living in it. It’s been a major week for Rih Rih. Fashion aside, the launch of Fenty Beauty last week made major headlines and sent every makeup obsessed consumer into an absolute frenzy (myself included). Seriously, is there anything Rihanna can’t do? Following her successful entrance into the beauty industry, up next was the Fenty x Puma S/S ‘18 show. Frankly nothing from this collection really blew me away, but the fact that Rihanna made her grand entrance and exit on a literal motocross bike (a potential tribute to her song Shut up and Drive I hope?) was enough to solidify her position as one of the most memorable moments from this year’s fashion week.
Cardi B On the Scene
It’s only right that the New York native and current chart topper be all over NYFW in her red bottoms. Arguably one of the celebs everyone was hoping to catch a glimpse of, The Bodak Yellow rapper was spotted attending several shows in outfits that did not disappoint. She even performed at Alexander Wang’s giant after party ‘Wang Fest’ which was one of the hottest events of the week. I honestly love Cardi B, she has genuinely worked hard for her success and just seems like such a bubbly and happy person. Keep thriving Cardi, it’s your time.
Ralph Lauren's Garage Show
How do you get some of New York’s most influential and fashion forward crowd as well as some of the top supermodels to go to Bedford, Brooklyn? You throw a fashion show there. Ralph Lauren previewed his Spring collection in none other than in his personal luxury car garage, where guests were treated to a candlelit dinner as they watched models such as Bella Hadid (bae) and Kendall Jenner strut past his impressive collection of Porsche's, Bugattis, and Jaguars. The collection included bold racing color gowns and chic oil slicked suitings. There was no sartorial shock value to the clothes, but they were undeniably chic, and Ralph gets extra points for venue creativity.
Jeremy Scott Celebrates 20 Years
A very Happy Anniversary is in order for one of fashion’s craziest and brightest lights, Jeremy Scott. Celebrating 20 years as a brand, Scott has graduated from an cheeky and fun runway presence to a well-deserved fashion week staple. For his birthday celebration, Scott brought out runway legends Karlie Kloss, Jourdan Dunn and Devon Aioki, who were swathed in signature Scott style: cartoon prints, camo, lurex, and neon. I always look forward to this show because it’s a much needed breath of fresh air, a reminder that fashion can be fun and irreverent. Congrats Jeremy, here’s to many more years of combining pop art with fashion, no one does it quite like you.
Oscar de la Renta Escalates
Inspired by the late Oscar's love of art galleries, creative director Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia's collection for the brand was full of dreamy gowns and feminine silhouettes. Models made quite the entrance (and exit), arriving to the runway via an escalator, truly putting fashion in motion. This may remind you of the Louis Vuitton S/S 2013 show, where a similar escalator idea was employed. Regardless of the slight copycat moment, this collection was absolutely gorgeous, and every fashion-loving girly girl's dream. I was also impressed by the artistic element to the clothing, paint brush inspired motifs and structural details played an important role in the collection. It's also important to note that Nicki Minaj was front row, in a knee length Oscar de la Renta fur coat, appropriate for for New York's balmy 80 degree weather, no?
